Kloster Neustift, an important centre for history and one of the best wine cellars in the Eisacktal/Valle Isarco is the starting point for the first stage. The 16-kilometre-long trail runs through the ancient chestnut grove past three small churches well worth seeing
Distance: 16 km Difference in altitude: 760 m Average walking time: 5 hours
The route starts at the bus stop at the new Eisack bridge near the Kloster Neustift (594m above sea level). It leads northwards along the right-hand, west bank of the river Eisack. Then along the left edge of the fields of the Punterhof (farm) to a small saddle with a wayside shrine and a seat to rest on. There, on the left, the route rises at first through woodland, then over fields in a southerly direction to Ehrenreicherhof on the hill of Gols. Now take the road downhill then right uphill to the bridge over traffic routes and then a path in a westerly direction to the residential zone of Vahrn. Here ascend along Spilucker Bach (brook) (Karl-Told-path) to Vahrn’s residential area in the chestnut grove (678m above sea level). Turn left at the third bridge on the road to Schalders; descend to the village centre of Vahrn, then go in a southerly direction along the hill of the church and on to woodland at the southern outskirts on the road to Salern. Take a left turning and continue on a woodland path, up and downhill to the fields of Neuhäusler-Hof and after a steep climb to the Burgerhof (750m above sea level, 2 hours, a fantastic panoramic view of Brixen with the western hill of the Plose and the main ridge of the Zillertal Alps). The route leads over the terraces, separated by wooded trenches, of the Oberebner and Eder-Hof to the Villscheider-Hof (715m above sea level, snack bar), rising on a tarmac road to the Breitwieser am Sattel at the Cyrillus hill, on a steep track to Zimmermannhof and there up and down on the road in the Tilser Bachgraben to Pinzagen (806m above sea level, ¾ hour). The route continues on level woodland paths in a southerly direction to the farms on the Ritten. Make the short climb to the road to Tötschling near to the Sader-Hof (900m above sea level, snack bar) and continue on the road to Tötschling (920m above sea level). Climb uphill at the last farm on the right and hike along a longer section through pine woodland. After Wöhrgraben you come to the Landgasthof Wöhrmaurer and to the Wöhrmann-Hof (snack bar). Continue on mostly level paths over fields on a panoramic hike to the raised stand Ziernfelder and descend for a short distance on the road to the village centre of Feldthurns (857m above sea level, 2 ¼ hours).
