Safe mountain experiences

Feeling confident in the mountains

In our holiday region, we promote mountain experiences that combine enjoyment of nature with safety. This means choosing tours that match your fitness level and experience, and assessing the weather, route length and elevation gain realistically.

Before every tour, we recommend keeping the following points in mind:

  • Choose a route that suits your abilities, not just your expectations of the view
  • Start early to avoid time pressure and reduce the risk of thunderstorms
  • Check the weather forecast and adapt your plans if conditions are uncertain
  • Stay on marked trails and avoid shortcuts
  • Plan breaks and manage your energy carefully
  • Turn back if conditions, the weather or your own energy level are not right

How to pack your backpack

Not too much. But everything you need.

In our holiday region, we highlight the importance of a well-packed backpack as part of a safe mountain experience. Even on easier hikes, the weather can change quickly, temperatures can vary and unexpected situations can arise.

For us, the basic equipment includes:

  • enough water
  • a small snack or energy supply
  • rain and wind protection
  • a warm layer of clothing, even in summer in the mountains
  • sun protection such as a cap, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • a fully charged mobile phone
  • a small first-aid kit
  • a map or tour information, either digital or printed

Depending on the tour, the following may also be useful:

  • trekking poles for longer descents
  • a headlamp if a later return is possible
  • blister plasters
  • a spare shirt
  • emergency numbers within easy reach

What matters is not carrying the biggest backpack, but having the right equipment for the route, the weather and your own level of experience.

Behaviour in thunderstorms and emergencies

Keeping a clear head when it matters most

In our holiday region, we provide clear information on how to respond to changing weather conditions and emergencies in the mountains. Especially in summer, thunderstorms can develop quickly, which is why preparation and timely action are particularly important.

In the event of a thunderstorm: act early

  • Start your tour early so that you can return before the afternoon
  • Watch how the weather develops, including cloud build-up, wind and thunder
  • If in doubt, turn back in good time
  • Leave ridges, summits and other exposed areas
  • Keep your distance from metal objects such as poles
  • Do not seek shelter under isolated trees

In an emergency: stay calm and act clearly

  • Stay calm
  • Secure the accident site if possible
  • Call emergency services and state your location as precisely as possible
  • Stay with the injured person
  • Keep them warm, for example with a jacket or additional clothing

For us, safety information is not a side issue. It is an essential part of our identity as a mountain and holiday region.
