Guest artist

Markus Gasser

Markus Gasser carves heads from walnut wood, giving form to a profound inward presence. His sculpture Hagen – 150 kilos, nearly one and a half metres tall – looks beyond the surface. For him, being human means entering an inner space where shadow and light meet.

“Being human means exploring the psychic space between shadow and light.”
About the artist
Markus Gasser
Markus Gasser, born in Bozen in 1970, lives and works as a sculptor in Brixen. From 1984 to 1989 he attended the state art school in St. Ulrich; in 1993 he completed his sculpture degree at the Brera Academy in Milan. He has worked as an independent sculptor since 1996, and from 2007 to 2018 he served on the board of the Südtiroler Künstlerbund (South Tyrolean Artists' Association).
Gasser's materials are wood, stone and colour – but his real subject is the human being. In heads, figures, polychrome pieces and sacred works he explores the ambivalence of the human being, the coexistence of good and evil, seeking to bring these opposites together into a harmony. In recent years his interest has turned above all to the head: heads that stand in dialogue with one another and are rooted in the earth. What concerns him is not the aesthetic surface, but the psychological dimension beneath it.
What inspired me to explore the theme of “being human”
In being human, what matters to me is to explore the psychological aspect, between shadow and light.
