Guest artist

Matthias Sieff

Matthias Sieff carves three polychrome wooden figures – Giullare 59, Sabry 5, Dama del sole M. For the sculptor and art teacher, the human figure is the oldest motif in art. Being human, for him, means the body as form, feeling and presence at once.

“The body reminds us that being human is form, feeling and presence at once.”
About the artist
Matthias Sieff
Matthias Sieff, born in Cavalese in 1982, lives and works as a sculptor and art teacher in Mazzin, in Val di Fassa (Trentino). After the art institute in Pozza di Fassa and the sculpture school in Selva di Val Gardena, he studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, graduating in 2006.
At the heart of his work is the human figure. In polychrome wood, Sieff creates monumental, static figures – often without arms, because the essential is already present – built on the intersection of horizontal and vertical axes. Inspired by the Moai of Easter Island and the Egyptian sphinx, his forms are simplified and geometric, yet remain organic.
What inspired me to explore the theme of “being human”
For me as a sculptor, the human figure is the most frequently depicted form in the history of art. Through the body, artists have always sought to understand and portray the human being. In sculpture, the human figure is not only a form: it also expresses emotions, identity and our presence in the world.
