Paul Moroder dë Doss

“Human = matter and spirit” – this formula has shaped Paul Moroder dë Doss’s work from the very beginning. ië y tu / ich und du / io e te, carved from a single block of chestnut wood, speaks simultaneously Ladin, German, and Italian. Being human, for him, means finding a balance between individuality and belonging.

“We are all leading roles – whether we become turning points is up to us.”
About the artist
Paul Moroder
Paul Moroder dë Doss, born in St. Ulrich in 1964, lives and works as a master sculptor in his home town of St. Ulrich in Gröden. He learned to carve at the age of fifteen in the workshop of his father, himself an academic sculptor, and at the art school in St. Ulrich; this was followed by two years of study in the United States.
He is known above all for his sacred art: liturgical chancel designs for numerous cathedrals, churches and chapels, as well as monumental works such as the five-metre bronze Archangel Michael for the Sacra di San Michele near Turin. His work has been recognised with, among other honours, the medal of the President of the Italian Republic and the medal of Pope John Paul II.
His materials are wood, bronze, stone and glass, and increasingly painting. At the heart of his work has always stood the human being – as a unity of matter and spirit.
What inspired me to explore the theme of “being human”
The human being is a unique creature, shaped both by individuality and by the capacity for social interaction. From birth we depend on these interactions in order to survive and to develop.
Every person possesses a unique personality, identity, thoughts and feelings, as well as strengths and weaknesses that set them apart from others.
Both as an individual and as part of a community, belonging and social bonds are indispensable for a fulfilled life and essential to our human existence. What is decisive here is the balance between our individuality and our integration into society.
Despite our capacity for social interaction, we feel loneliness. Loneliness is a feeling of isolation, of being alone, regardless of the presence of others. Even in the midst of a community, a person can feel lonely when understanding or acceptance is missing.
What is essential is to love and accept ourselves, to preserve our individuality and at the same time to maintain our connection with other people. This is of great importance if we are not to feel lonely, and if we are to create a more peaceful and inclusive society.
We are all protagonists, we are all actors; it lies with each one of us whether we truly wish to be turning points and to strive for change.
