In South Tyrol the prickly case enclosing the sweet chestnut is called a Keschtnigl, i.e., “chestnut hedgehog”. The Eisacktal/Valle Isarcois especially famous for its massive, sturdy chestnut trees and the fruit thereof.
Each autumn the village of Feldthurns/Velturno on the mountainside above Klausen/Chiusa devotes a week of activities to this delicious food, including culinary delights in local restaurants and chestnut trail walks.
