In South Tyrol the prickly case enclosing the sweet chestnut is called a Keschtnigl, i.e., “chestnut hedgehog”. The Valle Isarco/Eisacktal is especially famous for its massive, sturdy chestnut trees and the fruit thereof.
Each autumn the village of Velturno/Feldthurns on the mountainside above Chiusa/Klausen devotes a week of activities to this delicious food, including culinary delights in local restaurants and chestnut trail walks.
This year the climax will be on the Sunday “Nigl-Sunntig” with acrobats, music and gastronomic stalls.
